Description of Program and Relief
Unemployment Insurance Benefits
Unemployed workers affected by COVID-19 may be eligible for benefits under already-existing Mississippi unemployment insurance, which provides temporary income for workers who are unemployed through no fault of their own and who are either looking for new jobs or awaiting recall to employment. Individuals who are temporarily away from their jobs because they are quarantined by order of a medical professional or health authority as a result of contracting COVID-19 may also qualify if all other eligibility requirements are met and they intend to return to their job.

Eligibility Requirements/Restrictions
Basic eligibility requirements include being fully or partially unemployed, through no fault of one’s own; being physically able and available to work full-time; having qualifying base period wages; and being actively seeking work by making reasonable efforts to find employment each week.
Now, in light of COVID-19, people who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or who have been quarantined by a medical professional or government agency due to coronavirus are among those who can now file for benefits. Also included are people who were laid off or sent home without pay for an extended period by their employers. People who are caring for a family member who has been diagnosed with the virus are also included.
