Description of Program and Relief

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (“TANF”)

D.C.’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (“TANF”) program is a pre-existing program that provides individuals temporary aid until they are able to find employment. Specifically, the program provides cash assistance to families in need, along with a suite of services to facilitate their path to success, including being placed in private or public sector unsubsidized employment that enables them to enter and maintain meaningful jobs.

Customers who receive TANF benefits will continue receiving those existing benefits that would otherwise have expired during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) State of Emergency. Although there is no other specific guidance related to COVID-19, individuals struggling to find employment due to COVID-19 may be eligible for this program if they meet eligibility requirements (below). Families can now receive benefits beyond the federal 60-month lifetime limit. Families enrolled in the District’s TANF program may receive benefits so long as they are income eligible and have a child in the home. TANF also offers access to a variety of supportive services they can bundle together to meet their individual needs.
