Description of Program and Relief

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”)

D.C.’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”) is a pre-existing program that allows low income households to purchase food from they need from an authorized retailer. A SNAP account is established for participants and automatic deposits are made into the account each month. To access the account, participants receive an Electronic Benefits Transfer (“EBT”) card, which can be used like a debit card to purchase eligible food items.

In response to COVID-19, emergency benefits will be allotted, there will be automatic continuation of benefits, and interview requirements have also been adjusted through June 30, 2020. Additionally, effective as of May 13, District residents participating in SNAP can use their benefits to make online purchases of authorized food items using their EBT card on Amazon at amazon.com/snap-ebt.
