These resources – like the public health crisis itself – are constantly evolving and are only current as to the date of publication. This page was last updated on September 3, 2020.

Description of Program and Relief
Department of Motor Vehicles Extension of Expiration Dates
In light of COVID-19, all D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles documents with an expiration date on or after March 1, 2020 will remain valid until 45 days after the COVID-19 public health emergency concludes. Eligible documents include driver licenses, identification cards, vehicle registrations, inspections, ticket payments and ticket adjudication responses. Under DC law, your license, registration, and inspection are still valid.
All driver licenses, vehicle registrations, and vehicle inspections scheduled to expire have been granted a waiver without penalty until the D.C. DMV reopens at full operating capacity.
All tickets will remain in their current status for the duration of the public health emergency, and no additional penalties will be assessed during this period. In the interim, the public is encouraged to request adjudication and pay tickets online. Additionally, all driver license suspensions and revocations will be paused until the D.C. DMV returns to full operating capacity.
D.C. DMV remains operational with most necessary services provided online. Under Phase Two of D.C.’s re-opening plan, the following service changes begin on June 23, 2020:
-
All service centers, adjudication centers, and the Brentwood Commercial Driver License Office will operate on an “appointment only” basis.
-
The Inspection Station will operate on a first come, first serve basis with modified hours.
-
The Self-Service Vehicle Emission Inspection Kiosk will reopen with 24/7 access.
