The American Bar Association (ABA) named Paul, Weiss one of the winners of the 2011 Pro Bono Publico Awards at its annual meeting yesterday. The award honors individuals or organizations in the legal community that deliver volunteer legal services to the poor or disadvantaged. Specifically, the ABA acknowledged the firm's historical commitment to the public interest, the breadth and scope of its work and the dedication of the firm's lawyers.
Paul, Weiss has helped establish law and public policy in many areas, including civil rights, women's rights, rights of asylum, prisoners' rights and treatment of the homeless, and has authored groundbreaking reports on the legal rights of children and human rights in Iraq. In addition to significant high-profile cases with broad impact, Paul, Weiss has also been steadfast in its commitment to provide personal pro bono assistance to individuals in need of legal representation. In 2010 alone, the firm and its individual lawyers were honored by The Legal Aid Society of New York City, Immigration Equality, Sanctuary for Families, the New York State Bar Association, DC Appleseed and the City Bar Justice Center.
"The difference between good and great lawyers is that great ones make a difference in society," said ABA President Stephen N. Zack in a statement about the award's recipients. "It is crucial to taking on this country's appalling lack of access to justice, without which there is no rule of law. These awardees represent the best of our profession. This award appropriately honors their work."
