On August 18, litigation partner Loretta Lynch delivered a keynote address at the FIFA Women’s Football Convention in Sydney during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The two-day event, focused on growing women’s football, was attended by hundreds of football legends, leaders and administrators, including representatives from FIFA’s 211 member associations across the world.
Loretta spoke on “The Importance of Diverse Leadership.” Noting that football is a formative experience for billions of people around the world, she observed that “like all important things in the world, football must be diverse … Anything that represents the best of us must include all of us to be truly great.”
Loretta celebrated important advances in women’s football in recent years, acknowledged how hard-won many of the gains have been, stressed the well-documented benefits of diversity in leadership, and urged the global football community to continue its efforts to grow and diversify the sport, and ensure equal access and representation at all levels for girls and women across the world. It is important to “welcome women at the highest organizational levels, and in great numbers,” she noted, “because every girl who plays needs to know that football looks like her. Leadership looks like her. Power looks like her. And winning looks like her.”
