Litigation partner Chris Boehning and e-discovery counsel Ross Gotler participated in The Sedona Conference’s mid-year meeting, which reviewed draft commentaries and held panels on leading-edge discovery issues. The event took place from April 27 to April 29.
At the conference, Chris moderated a panel, “The Evolving Ethics of Technology Competence in a Post-Email World,” featuring a judge and representatives from Deloitte, Google and various law firms. The panel discussed ethics requirements of technology competence for lawyers, and the implication for lawyers of the continued shift in communications from email to chat, text, apps, Teams, Slack and technology focused on the cloud and Internet of Things.
Ross, who serves on The Sedona Conference’s steering committee, also moderated a panel, discussing the discovery implications of the Internet of Things. On this panel, Ross and other steering committee members reviewed a draft Sedona commentary on how tens of billions of connected devices (e.g., Fitbits, Apple Watches and Alexa-enabled devices) in both the consumer and business contexts may impact discovery law and practice.
The Sedona Conference is the preeminent think tank on litigation practice issues; its commentaries are regularly cited by judges in their decisions and have been the leading driver behind the last two major sets of amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Paul, Weiss is a long-time sponsor of Sedona and its working groups, which include groups on discovery, patents, trade secrets, and data security and privacy.
