Retired personal representation partner Bernard Greene passed away at the age of 94. A longtime member of the Paul, Weiss community, Bernie joined Paul, Weiss on August 1, 1951, and was elected to the partnership in 1961, remaining a partner until 1995. During his career at Paul, Weiss, Bernie advised many highly esteemed clients on their most significant trust and estate matters.
Early in his career, Bernie worked with several of the firm’s name partners, including Judge Simon Rifkind, Randolph Paul and Lloyd Garrison, on litigation and tax matters before specializing in estate litigation and estate planning and administration.
In a Paul, Weiss oral history interview from 1990, Bernie reflected on a case he argued on appeal less than five days after graduating from Yale Law School. “I must say that these were opportunities that you could get because the firm was small, it was growing, it had so much work and such a variety of work that, if there was anybody around who showed an inclination, a willingness and some ability to get it done right, there was no hesitation on the part of the partners. They would say, ‘Go ahead and do it,’” Bernie said. “I shall be eternally grateful having had that kind of opportunity.”
Bernie is survived by his four children, Edith Greene, Susan Greene, Jonathan Greene and David Greene; five grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
