Karen Dunn appeared in The New York Times in an article on June 3 on the New York Appellate Division, First Department’s unanimous ruling upholding the 2020 felony sex crimes conviction of disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. The decision increases the likelihood that Mr. Weinstein will serve a significant portion of his 23-year sentence.
In “Weinstein’s Sex Crime Conviction, a Milestone for #MeToo, Is Upheld,” Karen notes that the appellate decision will be viewed both as an affirmation of the #MeToo movement and the crucial role courts and juries play in addressing similar allegations.
“Our judicial system is often the last refuge for victims of sexual abuse, because it is a place where testimony can be heard and credited,” she says in the article. “In this case, the facts exploded into the public eye, and it would have been very hard to imagine an appellate court overturning a verdict on that set of facts.”
