Brad Karp and Jessica Carey Speak With New York Law Journal About Strength of Litigation Department

Practices & Industries

Firm Chairman Brad Karp and Litigation Department Co-Chair Jessica Carey spoke with the New York Law Journal as part of Paul, Weiss’s recognition as a finalist for “General Litigation Department of the Year” and “Finance Litigation Department of the Year.”

The Litigation Department continues to be trusted by clients facing their most urgent and threatening matters, Brad notes. “We are really the firm clients have on speed dial in a crisis,” he says. “We know how to ramp up quickly; for that reason, we’re often retained after an adverse decision, as trial is approaching, or when media, DOJ, congressional or regulatory attention poses significant reputational risk.”

Among the firm’s most satisfying achievements in the past year, Brad notes, were precedent-setting securities litigation victories for Ripple Labs co-founder Chris Larsen in the SEC’s closely watched enforcement action against the cryptocurrency company, and a complete win for Goldman Sachs in a long-running, high-value securities class action that has been to the Supreme Court and back.

On the financial services side, Jessica says, the firm helped a number of global banks defeat securities and antitrust class actions and shareholder derivative actions, and resolve intricate, high-stakes multi-regulatory inquiries; successfully represented leading payments and fintech companies in major litigation; and was go-to advisor to investment management firms in the full range of important litigation and regulatory matters. “Our financial services work truly reaches every corner of the industry,” she says.
