- February 22, 2023
Paul, Weiss is playing a key role in providing pro bono legal support for the Abortion Defense Network, which launched on February 22 to fill a crucial need following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The Abortion Defense Network is a new program designed to connect those facing legal threats related to abortion care with trusted attorneys who will provide legal advice and potential representation in civil and criminal proceedings. The program is managed by six leading reproductive rights organizations: the Lawyering Project, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Center for Reproductive Rights, If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice, the National Women’s Law Center and Resources for Abortion Delivery, in collaboration with state and regional public interest organizations, private law firms, and public agencies committed to safeguarding abortion access.
Anyone in the U.S. working to provide or support abortion care can seek legal assistance from the Abortion Defense Network. The Abortion Defense Network will also refer abortion patients who need legal support to If/When/How’s Repro Legal Helpline, which will continue to serve people seeking abortions who have legal questions or who have been threatened with arrest or prosecution.
The Paul, Weiss team leading the firm’s work with the Abortion Defense Network includes, among others, litigation partner Claudia Hammerman and counsel Aaron Delaney, and pro bono special counsel Steve Banks.
