Senior Treasury Official Joins Paul, Weiss

September 28, 2015

Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP announced today that Roberto J. Gonzalez, former Deputy General Counsel of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, will join the firm as partner in its litigation department, resident in Washington, D.C., where he will represent financial services and other clients, focusing on high-stakes litigation, white-collar criminal and regulatory defense, internal investigations, and congressional proceedings.

At the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Mr. Gonzalez advised the Treasury Secretary and senior officials on a range of legal and policy issues, managed significant litigation and oversight matters, and supervised more than 100 lawyers in areas including financial regulation, Dodd-Frank implementation, economic sanctions, anti-money laundering, and cybersecurity. Prior to that, Mr. Gonzalez was the Principal Deputy General Counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where he led a team of lawyers in resolving foundational questions about the Bureau's jurisdiction and authority and oversaw the legal review of all rulemakings, enforcement actions, and significant supervisory matters. Previously, he served as Associate White House Counsel and Special Assistant to the President, where he advised on financial regulation, criminal justice, and homeland security issues, among others, and represented the White House in congressional investigations.

"We are delighted to welcome a lawyer of Roberto's experience and expertise to our firm," said Paul, Weiss chair Brad S. Karp. "Our clients, including financial institutions, will benefit from his counsel and insights about their most significant legal issues."

"It is a tremendous privilege to join Paul, Weiss and the firm's premier litigation department," said Mr. Gonzalez. "I look forward to working with the firm's outstanding attorneys to help clients navigate complex, global legal issues with litigation, regulatory, and public policy dimensions."

"With his insights from three different vantage points in the Executive Branch, Roberto will be a significant addition to the Paul, Weiss family, and we are happy to welcome him to our Washington office," said Kenneth A. Gallo, managing partner of the Washington, D.C. office. "We look forward to working with him, and our global clients."

Mr. Gonzalez was named a D.C. Rising Star by the National Law Journal. At Treasury, Secretary Jacob J. Lew awarded Mr. Gonzalez the Treasury Medal in recognition of his accomplishments and leadership as Deputy General Counsel.

Mr. Gonzalez received his J.D. with distinction and Order of the Coif from Stanford Law School, where he was Senior Articles Editor of the Stanford Law Review, and his A.B. from Duke University, summa cum laude. Mr. Gonzalez clerked for Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens and, before that, for Second Circuit Judge Guido Calabresi.
