Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP announced today that Peter Carey has joined the firm as counsel in the Cybersecurity & Data Protection and White Collar & Regulatory Defense groups in the Litigation Department. Mr. Carey will reside in the Washington, D.C. office and will focus on cybersecurity and data protection, sensitive matters concerning national security, and global risk and crisis management.
Mr. Carey will focus on cyber incident response and preparedness, bolstering the firm’s market-leading cybersecurity capabilities and rapid growth in this area. He has handled some of the most serious and complex cybersecurity incidents and has expertise in the Foreign Agents Registration Act, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States and other national security matters. He also has deep experience advising clients on delicate and high-profile matters involving multi-jurisdictional investigations, congressional oversight, government enforcement actions and internal investigations.
Previously, Mr. Carey served as Senior Counsel to Sen. Orrin G. Hatch on the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, where he advised Sen. Hatch on a multitude of complex issues involving criminal law, cybersecurity and oversight, and was integral to negotiating and drafting numerous pieces of legislation.
Mr. Carey received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as articles editor for the Georgetown Journal of International Law. During law school, he interned at the U.S. Department of Justice in both the National Security Division and the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section. Mr. Carey earned his M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University and his B.A. in Government in the Plan II Honors Program from the University of Texas at Austin.
